Understanding Canadian Passport Types: Which One Do You Need?

Understanding Canadian Passport Types:

A Canadian passport does not come in one flavor. There are various types issued by IRCC, each of which is useful over a certain period of time. The first step, which is critical in your Canadian passport application or renewal, will be to pick the right one.

Canadian Passport Types

  1. Regular Passport (Standard Issue):

    • IRCC issues this most common passport type to most Canadian citizens for general international travel.
    • Colour of cover: Navy blue.
    • Validity: 10 years of adult people (16 years of age or more). 5-year validity for minors under 16 years of age. This is a very important argument to note! The process of renewing the passport of your child has different provisions and structure as that of an adult.
    • Pages: The usual number of pages is 36 pages (including the emergency pages). A passport that belongs to a child (who is below the age of 5 years) contains less pages.
    • Key Feature: Stores a biometric of bio data (digitized photo & finger print) in a secure cotton embedded chip. Most countries require this as the current standard for ePassports when traveling (except for visa-free travel such as under the US Visa Waiver Program).
    • Who Needs It: Nearly all of the Canadian citizens who intend to travel abroad, be it leisurely, business-wise, or visiting relatives and friends.
  2. Emergency Passport (Temporary Passport):

    • The Passport Program issues emergency passports for urgent travel within days or weeks when regular passports are lost, stolen, destroyed, or expired. It is NOT a planned travel wherein you just forgot to renew.
    • Cover Color: It is generally a unique color preferably red or green (varying).
    • Validity: Extremely short term valid up to one way travel to Canada usually or up to a single country, and back to Canada within a given time frame that is usually not more than 1 year. It is valid only with reference to the definite travelling mentioned in your emergency application.
    • Pages: Minimal pages (usually only that much which is required to have the visas/stamps needed to travel at that very time).
    • Key Feature: printed by a Canadian embassy overseas, high commission or consulate, or only in Canada by Passport Canada offices in serious emergencies. Needs substantial evidence of emergency and travel that is to occur soon.
    • Who Requires It: Residents of Canada who are overseas and have lost their passport, had it stolen or it has expired, but they have an urgent and unavoidable travel requirement (e.g. because of a medical emergency at home, or because of a business-critical situation). Do not submit an application to this with the anticipation that the process will be a normal renewal option. Conventional renewals are timely; allow time to do it.
  3. Diplomatic Passport:

    • What it is: it is issued to Canadian diplomats with accreditation, high-ranking government personnel (such as Ministers, Senators, Members of Parliament on official business), and their dependents who are entitled to it, when these citizens travel on official business.
    • Covered Color- Burgundy Red
    • Validity: It is normally 5 years.
    • Key Feature: Provides some diplomatic privileges and immunities as envisaged in the Vienna Convention, though does not also grant the holder exemption of common immigration and customs regulations. It is not personal traveling.
    • Who Needs It: Very restricted only the people who happen to travel on official government duty as prescribed at the Global Affairs Canada. Unsuitable to the general population.

     4. Special Passport:

    • The government issues this passport to specific groups of government workers, such as military personnel, RCMP officers, and officials from other departments, when they travel abroad for official work. These individuals do not qualify for diplomatic passports. It should be noted that the aforementioned people are not entitled to diplomatic passports.
    • Surface color: Dark green.
    • Validity: generally 5 years.
    • Notable Specification: Just like a diplomatic passport, this type of passport is denied the full benefits of diplomatic status. Travel only officially.
    • Who Needs It: Ordained employees of the government on official orders. Not to be applied in the common ways.

The thing is that in the case of 99.9 percent of Canadian citizens who will read this guide, the regular passport is the passport type you require to apply or reacquire. Be sure to find the proper application form (adult mail replenishment form- PPTC 153, first time or child forms- PPTC 040) and choose it according to your age and situation. Application of the inappropriate form is one of the main reasons for the delay in processing.
